Game Recap

The Mineral Ridge Rams and the United Eagles met in Canfield this evening in an OHSAA District Final match. This was the Rams first ever trip to a District Final and it was a bittersweet affair. The match would start with United ceremoniously playing the ball out of play on their 2nd touch, allowing the Rams to start Senior Captain Braedynn Porter, but immediately substituting her off at the beginning of the game. Porter had suffered a fractured ankle in the District Semifinal match against Crestview on Tuesday. When play resumed United and Ridge set about the task of trying to break each other down. The Rams would enjoy the majority of possession through most of the 1st half but would struggle in the final third and would not score. The Eagles however would find the net on 3 occasions mostly on the quick counter attacking speed of United forward Johnathan Logan. The Eagles would lead the Rams 3-0 at halftime. The 2nd half would be very similar to the 1st with the Rams possessing more but still struggling to score. United would add to their lead bringing it to 4-0. The Rams would finally get on the board courtesy of Garret Smith who would convert a penalty kick and then score again on a free kick. The Rams had drawn within 2 and the momentum was growing but time was also running out quickly. In the end, the Rams would lose to United 5-2. The Rams end their 2017 season as District Finalists with a 15-4 record.

Game Recap

The Mineral Ridge Rams hosted the Crestview Rebels tonight in the District Semifinal of the OHSAA State Tournament. It was a cold night, and after a rainy night and day, the field was quite soft and slippery. The 1st half was very evenly matched with both sides having a couple quality chances, but neither team would be able to score. The Rams would hold the edge in time of possession but would have to settle for a 0-0 score line at halftime. The 2nd half would see the Rams build upon that edge in possession, finding the opening goal just 4 minutes in. TJ Gaydosh would possess the ball just inside the top of the penalty box where he would find Gonzalo Arnes in the midst of Rebel defenders. Arnes would turn and shoot with his preferred left foot to beat the Crestview keeper and give the Rams a 1-0 lead. As short 4 minutes later, the Rams would score again as Dylan Henning would play a ball into the box from the right side that Arnes would also put past the keeper, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead. To their credit, the Rebels did not concede. They continued to battle, trying to work their way back into the match. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Matt Nery would score on a shot from outside the box that would hit the upper 90 of the Rams goal. Crest view had closed the gap to 2-1. The final 10 minutes would be desperate for both teams. The Rams would prove good enough to hold of the Rebels and earn their first entry into a District Final. The Rams will face United Local on Saturday 10/28/17. The match will be played at Canfield High School at 5:00pm. Good Luck Rams!

Game Recap

The Mineral Ridge Rams and the John F Kennedy Eagles faced off today in a Sectional Final of the OHSAA State Tournament. The sun was shining and the air was warm, a welcome change from years past were the weather was much less pleasant. The last time the Rams played the Eagles was in the Sectional Final of 2015. A sudden death goal in the 2nd overtime period by the Eagles ended the Rams playoff run that year. The Rams were hoping to return the favor today. The game started fast and fierce with neither team really being able to take control for the first 10-12 minutes. The Eagles would strike first, John Michael Diana would score to give JFK the early lead. The Rams regrouped and just 3 short minutes later Garret Smith would play TJ Gaydosh in behind the Eagles backline where Gaydosh would beat the Eagles keeper to put the Rams on the board. 3 minutes after setting up the Rams’ opening goal, Garret Smith would give the Rams a 2-1 lead assisted by Gonzalo Arnes. The score would remain 2-1 until 2 minutes before halftime when TJ Gaydosh would connect with Gonzalo Arnes on a long free kick to give the Rams a 3-1 lead at the half. The Rams started the 2nd half were they left off, scoring a 4 goal barely 3 minutes in when Ian Bitner would find Gonzalo Arnes with a cross into the box. The Rams now controlled the game with a 4-1 lead and was enjoying the majority of possession as well. The Rams would earn 2 penalty kicks in the 2nd half. Eagles Keeper Mike Neapolitian would save the first. Rams Senior Captain Gage Hostetler would convert the 2nd to give his Rams a 5-1 lead. The Rams defeated the Eagles 5-1 today and win their first Sectional Final. The Rams next opponent will be the Rebels of Crestview (Columbiana). The District Semifinal Match will take place at Joe Lane Stadium in Mineral Ridge on Tuesday (10/24/17) at 7:00pm.
